- I'm having problems with a new modem. I purchased a generic 28,800
- V.34 internal fax modem from Fry's Electronics in Palo Alto, CA (a $99
- special advertised in the Dec. 29 San Jose Mercury News). The package
- and user manual don't even list a manufacturer. It uses a Rockwell
- chipset (but doesn't seem to use RPI software.)
-
- After I installed it (as COM2, the port used by the 14.4 modem it was
- supposed to replace), I could get it to dial, but the modem would not
- connect with my ISP or any BBSs I usually call. I would occasionally
- get a CARRIER 28800 message, but no connection. After struggling with
- several init strings, I was finally able to get a connection using:
- &F&D1&Q6&C1
-
- However, despite the CONNECT 38400 message, I can't send or receive
- mail and load graphics-intensive Web pages. After a couple minutes,
- the carrier drops.
-
- I'm using the factory dip switch settings which install the modem as
- COM2 using IRQ3. Those are the same setting used by my old 14.4(which
- I had to re-install to post this article). The only other active
- serial port is COM1(used by my mouse.)
-
- This V.34 modem selectively echoes some of the terminal messages (my
- software isn't set-up to echo). I'll see OKK, instead of OK or
- CONNNECTT 388400 instead of CONNECT 38400, ATTDT instead of ATDT, etc.
-
- I'd appreciate any advice about configuring this modem before I return
- it. So far, this $99 special isn't worth 99 cents.
